LINDBERG 204  "GOUDA" DUTCH MAN-OF-WAR "NAVIRE DE GUERRE"  1/125 SCALE

DESCRIPTION:

"Dutch Man of War Gouda" refers to a legendary female warrior named Kenau Simonsdochter, a historical figure from the Dutch city of Gouda, often considered a "Dutch Man of War" due to her bravery and leadership in defending her town against Spanish forces during the Eighty Years' War; her story highlights a woman taking on a traditionally masculine role in warfare, earning her a place in Dutch folklore.
The Gouda was built around 1636 as a warship, and hired by the Admiralty of Amsterdam in 1652. She was constructed when Dutch shipbuilding was the model for its naval rivals, a model lasting 200 years.
This Man-O-War was a two-decker, the preferred Dutch construction type, because it gave their ships more speed and maneuverability. Her lighter construction, however, had a drawback when it came to withstanding close in fire. (The French and English preferred sturdier three deck ships for this reason.)
Like all Dutch Man-O-Wars, the Gouda had a red lion figure head and lanterns along her sides and decks. This was different from English and French ship construction which were always covered with elaborate ornamentation.
The Gouda fought in the first Anglo-Dutch War on the side of Holland, being commanded by Jan Egbertsz Ooms. The Gouda,, along with many other ships from Vice Admiral Witte de With's fleet, was lost in a storm in early November, 1653.
